Industry Continues Near Perfect Compliance on Ruminant Feed Ban posted on 8/5/2004 11:00:04 AM
An update issued by the FDA today notes that rendering and feed industries continue to achieve a near perfect score – with 99% of the firms surveyed in full compliance - with guidelines laid down by the government for enforcing feed production and the feeding of mammalian protein to ruminants.
This rule, referred to as the ruminant feed ban, became effective on August 4, 1997, and is considered an important firewall in combating BSE in the U.S.
As of July, 17, 2004, the FDA has received over 31,000 inspection reports from around the country, with a majority of the inspections being conducted by state officials under contract to FDA.
All inspections are classified based on objectionable conditions documented, and fall into three categories: Official Action Indicated (OAI), Volunteer Action Indicated (VAI) and No Action Indicated (NAI)
According to FDA, of the total number of firms who are handling materials prohibited from use in ruminant feed – 2,901 – the most recent inspections revealed 17 firms receiving OAI (less than 1 percent of total) and 86 firms receiving VAI (3 percent of total).
Of the 161 renderers handling prohibited materials, their most recent inspection revealed that: 0 firms (0%) were classified as OAI; 4 firms (2.5%) were classified as VAI.
